Originally from Goregaon, Mumbai, Prabhavati was married at the age of 23. Soon she suffered two miscarriages and her husband passed away. Today, Prabhavati is happy and secure in her new found home away from home and says “The family I never had, I've found it here. We all live here like brothers and sisters, I'm not in want of anything now.”

She found new place to call home after her son and husband passed away. Nirmal has been staying at one of our OldAge homes since last 3 years and believes, that the way light from a diya expels darkness, the same way it will transform darkness into light, in her life.

Had two sons, elder one passed away too early and violently beaten by the younger one, she now works as a maid. HelpAge India’s support a gran initiative feeds her for the last 12 years. In her own words:

Is 76 years old but when she smiles it's the smile of a 16 year old. Her endearing smile hides a life of pain. Today Prabhadevi lives life on her own terms. “I'm alone, I've been coming here to get ration for the past 15 years. Through this ration I've got respect from my family & community” – says a smiling Prabhadevi.

A resident of kandivali, Indrabali finds it difficult to walk, has a heart problem and gets shortness of breath. His wife has also been through a bypass surgery and was unable to afford medicines. After 2 years of coming to HelpAge India’s mobile healthcare unit site, Indrabali’s health has improved.

Works as a maid at 4 different homes, and her knees pain a lot. She is all by herself and doesn’t have money to even go to a hospital. HelpAge India’s Mobile Healthcare Unit has been helping her for the last 10 years.

A farmer from Gautum Budh District, relies on the MHU for her routinely medication for hypertension and blood pressure. As she is 70 years old working in the field is difficult for her.

Was born in Karachi and came to India in 1947. After her husband passed away, she was mistreated by her kids and their partners. Even her landlord filed a case against her, where she had been living since last 43 years. Currently stays at one of our old age homes and relies on the mobile healthcare unit for medicines. With further help from physiotherapy provided by HelpAge, she feels healthy and lives with dignity.

Used to work in Cuddalore district and suddenly lost vision in both of his eyes. During that time, all of his friends abandoned him. Didn’t even had money for food, shelter or medical treatment. With everybody gone, he decided to commit suicide. After being admitted to one of our old age homes, he got a new family and even went through eye surgery which restored his vision. A farmer from Bhagwanpur village, Supaul district, Bihar, was finding it difficult to go to work everyday, as his vision started blurring. Unable to work in the paddy fields anymore. The fear of losing his only means to livelihood was looming before him. After months of struggling with his eyesight, there was a ray of hope when he heard about an eye screening camp being conducted by HelpAge India. Today new glasses stay constantly perched on his nose and happy Siyaram is back to work and back to life again.

Vangayagudem, Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, has two sons and a daughter, yet no one to look after her. Living in abject poverty, her own children are unable to support her. With the meager pension she gets, she barely has anything left to sustain herself after paying her basic monthly rent of Rs. 300. Left alone, with no one to reach out to, her good Samaritan neighbors called the HelpAge Elder Helpline. The Helpline team immediately got into action and found a home for Veeravalli, where she has now found a safe haven and lives life without fear.

A teacher by profession in a private school, he was hit hard by the lockdown. Ever since the number of positive cases of Covid 19 started to rise in the country, schools, colleges and universities were shut down and the education system froze. His family consisting of five other members were all dependent on him, including his sick parents, his wife and children. “We’re surviving on what we have saved so far, but now that is almost over and we are almost about to starve!” –said Kumar. Devastated, he called HelpAge India’s Elder Helpline number (1800-180-1253) and requested for ration, a Survival Kit for himself & his family, so they could have the basic essentials to survive.

Recognizing the ever-growing need for assistance for elderly patients, HelpAge India in partnership with AIIMS, New Delhi started a Geriatric Helpdesk. The overall goal for establishing the geriatric helpdesk was to facilitate high quality and hassle free access to health services by elderly patients.

The Helpdesk is providing assistance in – registration, OPD cards, taking an appointment, assistance with a wheelchair, assisting with paperwork for a medical fee waiver for needy elderly patients and more. Elderly arriving at AIIMS in New Delhi now have an additional support ‘HelpAge Elders Help Desk’ to guide them through easy access to facilities and medical procedures.
