Ms. Shalini Dewan, Director, UNIC, honors Mr. Chander Dhawan, 87 year old Pictographer on behalf of HelpAge with the Inspirational Achiever Award. Looking on is Mr. M.M. Sabharwal, President Emeritus, HelpAge India.
A traveling artist, looking for moments to capture within his lens. 86 year old Chander Dhawan is man always on a mission of discovery. He is someone who loves to play with nature and its various moods, for him age just another number. A "Pictographer" he calls himself. A man who traveled to Leh via road from Manali at the age of 82, he is always searching for that perfect moment to capture. He virtually introduced the art-form-of-photography in Jamshedpur, he founded the Bihar Photographic Society and for 15 yrs remained its President.
He retired from the corporate life in TATA Steel in Jamshedpur in 1983 at the age of 60, then went on to work in a firm in Kolkata for another 9 years, but his true calling was his camera. Even during those working years he never failed to travel without it.
In fact in 2008 he held his first solo exhibition titled VoyAge where he showcased 55 of his Lifetimes work, an initiative which HelpAge India supported.
He has also been awarded the Artist Federation International de-la ART Photographique (AFIAP) from the International Federation of Photography, then based in Switzerland in 1960.
